Maverick Landscaping is a locally owned, family oriented business located in Stilwell, Kansas specializing in traditional flagstone patios, masonry outdoor fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, swimming pools, brick pizza ovens, stone smokers, cedar pergolas and decks and stone water fountains.
After obtaining a Biology degree from UMKC owner Maverick Pickering sold medical capital equipment and found the career stressful and unrewarding. Maverick found himself watching a lot of gardening and landscape construction television shows at night and decided happiness and passion were more important than money, so he backed up and took a different career path into landscaping. In 1999 Maverick Landscaping Inc. was born. Starting out in a new business is never easy, taking on most jobs he could find, they continued to build a good reputation one satisfied client at a time. The company continued to evolve until he was finally able to focus the company in a direction he truly found rewarding. Specializing in traditional hand laid flagstone patios and family entertainment outdoor living areas centered around cooking in the great outdoors.
Maverick has a true consuming passion for his work and can be found with his crew on the job site full time installing only one project at a time. Each project's design is carefully tailored to fit the personality of the client. Maverick asks lots of questions during the design process because he wants the Outdoor Living Area to provide entertainment space to fit the client's lifestyle. Maverick always tries to help a new client find the right design by leading them through a series of decisions that in the end leads to a truly unique artistic investment that their family can enjoy for years.
Almost every patio centers around cooking outdoors. Using traditional masonry techniques Maverick Landscaping includes a stone grill island or outdoor kitchen that can include a premium gas grill, a charcoal stainless steel grill, a smoker, a single or double side burner and a sink in the stone countertop and under the counter can hold a cooler drawer, an outdoor refrigerator, a wine cooler or utility drawers. The focus of the patio is usually an outdoor fireplace or a fire pit. Maverick can build specialized fireplaces that are designed to cook in and can include gantries to hang pots over the fire, rotisseries to hold a roasting chicken and a cooking grate for wonderful wood fired steaks. And if baking bread and pizzas is your passion they also install old world wood fired brick pizza and bread ovens. Next Maverick likes to add a cedar pergola to include shade, architecture, and a ceiling fan. A project, and of course a patio, is never complete without a waterfall or stone water fountain, which adds a cooling and relaxing affect to the completed outdoor environment.
Over the years Maverick has realized that there is no substitute for natural stone. Natural Stone only looks better with age. Each stone in the project is hand dressed and laid with care. Maverick can also color the grout to match the stone. Maverick Landscaping wants the style of traditional masonry to match and compliment the architecture of the house.
